Live events have grown tremendously in the recent years due to a few factors. For one, the music industry has to rely heavily on concert touring to replace revenues offset by digital distribution and piracy. Secondly, sporting events continue to get bigger as do the venues they are being held at, creating automatic exposure to millions of people. Lastly, technological advances continue to amuse audiences and gather quick buzz. Some specific trends currently popular are:
1) WIRELESS SQUEEZE – Spectrum reallocation will make using multiple channels of wireless microphones for an event a bigger squeeze because mobile devices are eating up data. Smartphones use 24x more data than traditional phones and tablets 122x. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is working on ways to free up extra spectrum by wrestling it from other government agencies and negotiating with TV broadcasters to make unused spectrum available through auctions. The goal for 2020 is to free up additional 500 MHz.
2) FLAT PANELS VS PROJECTION WALLS- While projection video has been the main provider, it now needs to share popularity with flat-screen displays. The new generation of LCD, multicelled videowalls, offers many advantages over tradition front and rear projections from the past. Picture clarity where there is strong ambient light seems to be the most noticeable advantage. Lower power consumption seems to be the other popular upside to flat screens.
3) VIDEOWALLS- The lower cost of videowalls in present day have made them much more accessible. This applies to consumer-grade LCD displays. A few years ago, videowalls were considered extremely pricey and not an option to the average consumer, now they can be considered more mainstream.
4) 4K- The technology that is already in place to project 4K resolution already quadruples that of current 1080p. It is certainly very bright, enough for outdoor use.
Live events are a beneficial way to expose evolving technology and a certain way to reach millions of people. When thinking of live events, it is wise to remember that there is no riskier strategy than to continue doing the same thing.
